One of the major high street banks has been marketing an investment product that is offering 10% per annum as a capital gain, provided that the FTSE 100 remains at it's starting level or rises over the next five years. This is an interesting product - for many people the resulting capital gain would be within their capital gains tax allowance and therefore free of tax.

• the average stock market recovery has taken 55 months
• the average percentage change has been 131.4% from the lowest to the highest point. (Using the US Dow Jones index as the measure) - see the Credit Suisse research below. 
• This time the recovery has taken only 9 months but is approximately 50% of the average at 67.7%
